Die CART-Saison 1990 war die 12. Saison der CART-Rennserie und die 69. Meisterschaftssaison im US-amerikanischen Formelsport.
Hintergrund
Die Saison 1990 begann am 8. April in Phoenix und endete nach 16 Rennen am 21. Oktober auf dem Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey.
Im Jahr 1990 fusionierte das Team von Rick Galles und das Kraco Team, Inhaber Maurice Kranes, zu einem Zwei-Wagen-Team mit dem Namen Galles-Kraco Racing. Die Autos fuhren Al Unser Jr. und Bobby Rahal.
Ex-Formel-1-Fahrer Emerson Fittipaldi verließ Patrick Racing um zum Team Penske zu wechseln.
Chip Ganassi kaufte Patrick Racing und wurde zu Chip Ganassi Racing, Pat Patrick seinerseits kaufte das Team von Alfa Romeo.
Am Ende der Saison zog sich March aus der CART-Serie zurück.
Saisonverlauf
Al Unser Jr. fuhr mit dem auf diese Saison hin fusionierten Galles-Kraco Racing Team zum Fahrer-Meistertitel. Er stand einmal auf der Pole-Position, gewann sechs Rennen und stand zehn Mal auf dem Siegerpodium. Michael Andretti stand vier Mal auf der Pole-Position und konnte fünf Rennen für sich entscheiden. Am Ende der Saison machten 29 Punkte den Unterschied zwischen den beiden Kontrahenten.
Der Niederländer Arie Luyendyk war beim Indianapolis 500 siegreich und war auch der bestplatzierte Europäer in der Fahrerwertung mit dem achten Rang.
Den Titel „Rookie of the Year“ ging an den Ex-Formel-1-Fahrer Eddie Cheever. Der US-Amerikaner wurde zweimal Dritter und belegte den neunten Platz in der Fahrer-Meisterschaft.
