Die CART-Saison 1986 war die 8. Saison der CART-Rennserie und die 65. Meisterschaftssaison im US-amerikanischen Formelsport.
Hintergrund
Die Saison 1986 begann am 6. April in Phoenix und endete nach 17 Rennen am 9. November in Miami.
Das Indianapolis 500 war für den 25. Mai geplant, musste aber wegen Regens auf den 31. Mai verschoben werden. Das Rennen auf der Milwaukee Mile rückte deshalb vom 1. Juni auf den 8. Juni nach hinten.
Das Rennen in Road America startete am 21. September und musste nach wenigen Runden wegen Regens abgebrochen werden. Am 4. Oktober fuhr man das Rennen zu Ende.
Saisonverlauf
Das erste Rennen der Saison in Phoenix gewann Kevin Cogan und das zweite in Long Beach Michael Andretti. Für beide war es der erste Sieg in der CART-Serie.
Das Indianapolis 500 entschied Bobby Rahal für sich, ebenso die Fahrer-Meisterschaft. Andretti kämpfte mit Rahal bis zum letzten Saisonrennen um den Titel. Nach einem Ausfall von Andretti beim letzten Rennen in Miami stand Rahal als Gesamtsieger fest. Die beiden Kontrahenten trennten nur acht Meisterschaftspunkte. Rahal gewann sechs von den 17 ausgetragenen Rennen während der Saison, Andretti deren drei.
Der Titel „Rookie of the Year“ ging an den US-Amerikaner Chip Robinson. Er belegte in der Fahrer-Meisterschaft den 26. Platz mit sechs Punkten.
