Die CART-Saison 1987 war die 9. Saison der CART-Rennserie und die 66. Meisterschaftssaison im US-amerikanischen Formelsport.
Hintergrund
Die Saison 1987 begann am 5. April in Long Beach und endete nach 16 Rennen am 1. November in Miami.
Das Team Truesports wechselte auf diese Saison hin von den March-Chassis zu Lola und gewann mit Bobby Rahal die Fahrer-Meisterschaft.
Der deutsche Autobauer Porsche gab während der Saison sein Debüt in dieser Serie.
Das Team Penske verwendete anfangs Saison March-Chassis, wechselte dann zu den selbst gebauten Penske-Chassis.
Saisonverlauf
Die Fahrer-Meisterschaft machten auch in diesem Jahr Bobby Rahal und Michael Andretti unter sich aus. Zum zweiten Mal in Folge gewann Rahal die Meisterschaft und Andretti wurde Vize-Meister. Am Ende der Saison hatte Rahal 30 Punkte Vorsprung auf Andretti. Beide gewannen vier Rennen während des Jahres.
Mario Andretti dominierte bis 23 Runden vor Schluss das Indianapolis-500-Rennen. Wegen eines Motorschadens musste der Sieger von 1969 das Rennen aufgeben. Al Unser siegte zum vierten Mal beim Indy 500.
Der Italiener Fabrizzio Barbazza sicherte sich mit dem 12. Platz in der Fahrer-Meisterschaft den Titel „Rookie of the Year“. Bester Europäer war Arie Luyendyk aus den Niederlanden mit dem siebten Rang in der Gesamtwertung.
